IRMAK CANEVI

This is an exhibition simply named after two lemon pips; one of the smallest and most endearing entries in a 366-item inventory collected by Irmak Canevi by way of choosing one item every day throughout the year 2020. Home to a pair of living things ready to come into existence at any moment, these pips have been charged with representing a new body of work. As such, they have a very special place in the scheme of things.

Greeting its audience in a spirit of hope and anticipation, the exhibition has been designed around three different foci: (i) a structure made of polyethylene foam sheets, generally used for packaging, that holds one year’s entire hoard, (ii) a stack of large sheets of paper with photographs of the collection on the front, and on the back, accounts of where these items came from, and how and why they were chosen, and (iii) a series of collages and assemblages the artist produced from the images of the things he had collected.

Having worked with a range of wildly differing forms throughout his practice, this exhibition sees Irmak initiating fresh quests through the components he has collected, of every size and color. Here at Ka Atölye he gives room to playful forms and platforms informed by a variety of materials he recently encountered.

Two Lemon Pips is the artist’s first exhibition in Ankara, the beloved city of his birth and upbringing.

Sergiye adını veren iki limon çekirdeği Irmak Canevi’nin 2020 yılı boyunca her gün bir şey seçerek biriktirdiği 366 kalemlik envanterin en küçük ve sevimli girdilerinden biri. Mekana dağılan kurgunun temsiliyetini de üstlenmiş olan ve her an var olmaya hazır bir çift cana ev sahipliği yapan bu çekirdeklerin yeri ayrı.

Seyircisini umutla karşılayan sergi üç farklı odak etrafında tasarlanmış. Sanatçının seçkisi: (i) bir yıllık birikimin tamamını taşıyan ambalaj köpüğünden inşa ettiği bir yapı, (ii) ön yüzünde koleksiyonun fotoğraflarına yer veren ve arkasında bunların nereden gelip, nasıl ve neden seçildiklerinden bahseden afişler ve (iii) topladığı şeylerin görselleriyle oynayarak ürettiği kolajlardan oluşuyor.

Pratiğinde birbirinden farklı biçimleri bir araya getiren Irmak, bu sergisinde de toplamış olduğu irili ufaklı, rengarenk parça üzerinden yeni arayışlara giriyor; dikkatini çeken çeşitli malzemeden esinlenen taze form ve platformlara yer veriyor Ka Atölye’de.
